Apaan oil – α-Phenylacetoacetonitrile Oil is an analytical reference chemical structurally categorized as an amphetamine precursor. People also use APAAN to generate phenylacetone which is then modified to synthesize amphetamine. APAAN is meant for forensic and research purposes. It can also be used as a reagent or raw material in organic synthesis both in scientific and industrial research. There are few known legal purposes for APAAN.

APaan Oil Procedure

A solution of sodium ethoxide is prepared from 60 g. (2.6 gram atoms) of clean sodium and 700 cc. of absolute alcohol in a 2-l. round-bottomed flask equipped with a reflux condenser. To the hot solution is added a mixture of 234 g. (2 moles) of pure benzyl cyanide and 264 g. (3 moles) of dry ethyl acetate . The mixture is thoroughly shaken, the condenser closed with a calcium chloride tube, and the solution heated on the steam bath for two hours before standing overnight. The next morning the mixture is stirred with a wooden rod to break lumps, cooled in a freezing mixture to −10°, and kept at this temperature for two hours. The sodium salt is collected on a 6-in. Büchner funnel and washed four times on the funnel with 250-cc. portions of ether. The filter cake is practically colorless and corresponds to 250–275 g. of dry sodium salt, or 69–76 per cent of the calculated amount. The combined filtrates are placed in the freezing mixture until they can be worked up as indicated  here.

Ways of converting APAAN to BMK

  • Using phosphoric acid
  • Using sulphuric acid where the needed heat is generated using cooking vessels or the needed heat generated by the exothermic reaction between water and sulphuric acid.
  • Using hydrochloric acid

Authorities are currently very tough on APAAN conversion labs, and they investigate them just like the other labs that produce synthetic drugs. Converting APAAN to BMK comes with so many risks and hazards that come from the production equipment used and the chemicals. Using acids with defective equipment such as plastic barrels and heating materials causes a more significant threat. The modifications that people make to the vessels mostly produce more significant issues during dismantling, stabilization, storage, and transport.

The authorities are doing their best to designate APAAN and other related salts as schedule 1 drugs under the substance act. APAAN is used illegally by homemade labs to produce schedule 11 controlled substances such as P2P, amphetamine, and methamphetamine and it is very crucial in the manufacture of these chemicals. However, this proposal is not to completely ban APAAN since the compound is still essential for several users. However, any transaction regardless of size will be regulated.
