Psychedelics

Psychedelics

Psychedelics are a subclass of hallucinogenic drugs whose primary effect is to trigger non-ordinary mental states and an apparent expansion of consciousness.

Also referred to as classic hallucinogens or serotonergic hallucinogens, the term psychedelic is sometimes used more broadly to include various types of hallucinogens, such as those which are atypical or adjacent to psychedelia like salvia and MDMA, respectively.

Classic psychedelics generally cause specific psychological, visual, and auditory changes, and oftentimes a substantially altered state of consciousness.

Common Types of Psychedelics

  • Psilocybin: Found in certain wild mushrooms, causing visual distortions and euphoric states.
  • LSD: A potent synthetic chemical derived from grain fungus.
  • Mescaline: A naturally occurring compound found in peyote and other cacti.
  • DMT: A fast-acting compound present in plants like those used to brew ayahuasca

Effects and Brain Impact

  • Perceptual shifts: Visual and auditory hallucinations, or a blurring of the senses.
  • Altered thinking: Time distortion, a sense of unity, or deep introspection.
  • Neural changes: Temporary disruption of standard communication across brain networks, notably changing activity in the default mode network.

Hallucinogens

Hallucinogens are psychedelic drugs that can potentially change the way people see, hear, taste, smell or feel, and also affect mood and thought. Types of hallucinogens include LSD, peyote, PCP, psilocybin and others

Types of Hallucinogens

  • Classic psychedelics: Drugs like LSD, psilocybin, and DMT that bind to serotonin receptors in the brain.
  • Dissociatives: Drugs like ketamine and PCP that block NMDA glutamate receptors, making users feel detached from their body and environment.
  • Deliriants: Substances like certain plants that induce a state of confused delirium.

Psychedelic Mushrooms

Hallucinogenic mushrooms, commonly called magic mushrooms or shrooms, are wild or cultivated fungi containing natural psychoactive compounds like psilocybin. When ingested, the body converts psilocybin into psilocin, which alters perception, mood, and thought patterns for roughly 4 to 6 hours.

Types and Compounds

  • Psilocybin species: Found across roughly 200 species in genera such as Psilocybe, Panaeolus, and Gymnopilus. Common potent examples include Psilocybe azurescens and Psilocybe semilanceata.
  • Amanita muscaria: Distinct from psilocybin mushrooms, the iconic red-and-white spotted fly agaric contains different psychoactive compounds, primarily muscimol and ibotenic acid.

Effects and Experience

  • Onset: Effects typically begin within 20 to 40 minutes when eaten raw, dried, or brewed into tea.
  • Perceptual shifts: Users often experience vivid visual or auditory distortions, altered time perception, and emotional shifts ranging from euphoria to anxiety.
  • Physical symptoms: Dilated pupils, increased heart rate, dizziness, and mild nausea are common.

Magic Mushroom

Magic mushrooms, commonly known as shrooms, are wild or cultivated fungi that contain the active psychedelic compounds psilocybin and psilocin. When ingested, the body converts psilocybin into psilocin, altering perception, mood, and thoughts, and causing visual or auditory hallucinations.

Phycobilin Mushroom

Psilocybin mushrooms, or magic mushrooms, are wild or grown fungi that contain the natural psychedelic drug psilocybin. When you eat them, your body changes psilocybin into psilocin. This chemical alters your senses, mood, and thoughts, often causing visual or auditory hallucinations.

How do shrooms make you feel?

Magic mushrooms change how a person sees, hears, and feels. Effects typically start within 30 minutes, last four to six hours, and include a mix of strong visual changes, shifting emotions, and body feelings.

How long do magic mushrooms last?

The effects of magic mushrooms typically last between 3 to 6 hours. The experience begins 20 to 40 minutes after eating them, hits its strongest peak at 1 to 2 hours, and slowly fades during a 2 to 3 hour come-down.
