amphetamine

Amphetamine oil (A-oil) is used in one reaction of a pot to synthesize amphetamine, but it is difficult to isolate and clean the drug. When heated with formic acid, N-formylamphetamine forms a mixture of phenylactone and formamphetamide which produces amphetamine hydrochloride in hydrolysis. The oily fluid of amphetamine is produced after neutralization with a milder base. The amphetamine oil is then distilled by steam to obtain pure amphetamine. A sulfuric acid is then used to treat the basic amphetamine to get crystalline salt.
